America's Teachers

America's Teachers at I/ITSEC (AT @ I)

In 2008, the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) launched the pilot program of America’s Teachers at I/ITSEC (Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference: www.iitsec.org) and it was a huge success! The goal of this program is to familiarize teachers of science, technology, engineering, and math with the field of modeling and simulation and support STEM education and careers. The modeling and simulation industry is growing and it depends on a pool of talented engineers, computer scientists, and behavioral scientists. Teachers' awareness of this field could help to guide young people toward preparing for modeling and simulation careers. The teachers that attended the conference have been impressed with everything they experienced and are still talking about applying what they learned to their daily teaching activities. We are pleased to continue the event this year allowing more of America’s Teachers to experience all that I/ITSEC has to offer.

The best part about attending I/ITSEC was being able to learn about Modeling and Simulation from people who are really doing it.  Understanding the value of exposing students to the types of career fields that will be associated with M & S is wide and varied and many students would find some aspect that would interest them.

I was most impressed at all of the technology that was being used.  I was able to show some of my students using some of the youtube videos posted by NTSA, which hopefully showed them that these are careers that are exciting and desirable.  They all play video games, and looking at some of the kids' faces as they watched video of the simulators was amazing.  It was awesome just to be there and to be able to see (and use!) some of the simulators.  I know I have a much greater appreciation of what M&S is and what M&S can do from being at I/ITSEC.  It is also nice to see that our country is still much much farther ahead in the development of these kinds of technologies than the rest of the world.  It is a very good thing to see.

While there were many things I really liked about the conference, the biggest for me was to see the support the industry has for education. I realize that coming from the “T” and “E” in STEM gives me a different outlook, but prior to learning about the conference I hadn’t really heard of or considered Modeling and Simulation as a viable option for my students. Now, I am excited about the field and working to incorporate M&S into my curriculum.
